The work of Ron Patterson
Ron Patterson studied art at the Central Academy of Art in Cincinnati, Ohio where he studied under the distinguished painter of Western Art, Jackson Grey Story. Patterson worked for many years as a commercial artist and illustrator before entering the world of fine art.
Vibrant colors, dynamic composition and powerful expression go hand-in-hand with imagination and expert craftsmanship to create works of amazing depth and dimension which are at once intriguing and disarming to the viewer.
It was at a very young age, through the inspiration and encouragement of his middle school art teacher that Patterson discovered both his love of art and his own talent for painting that has sustained him throughout his life.
As Patterson continued his in high school and college, he devoted a major effort to developing as a painter, all the while studying seriously other related types of art including graphic design, illustration and advertising art direction of which he credits with making a major contribution to the development of his work.
Although he pursued his first love in the area of portraiture by concentrating on more realistic painting including special studies in anatomy, he also developed his talent further by studying in other styles such as impressionism, surrealism and cubism.
Patterson's body of work is compositions of the joys in life, love, music, dance, animals and nature. This sense of joyousness in color and tone with the temperance that love is indeed blind flows through all his work. Most of his human figures have no eyes... they are merely joyful shapes and movements loving life's pleasures without really seeing. That joyful naiveté that always goes hand in hand with adorational love in all it's many forms.
The paintings are generally done on a grand scale in his characteristic bold colorful manner with loose sweeping brushwork. He is generous with color and movement is supreme in his paintings... one can't help but be up-lifted to a better mood when taken into one of Ron Patterson's creations.
Patterson continues to paint, influenced strongly by all his experiences. In his chosen medium of acrylic (on canvas or paper), he explores a realm which the French have called - "a statement in the fluidity of the natural figure". He creates a tension between each figure, a kinship of place or condition that provokes the viewer to seek reason for such relationships.
